The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad began running a round trip passenger train between Alamosa Colorado and La Veta Colorado over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in 2006. The train runs through Blanca on its way to Veta Pass. It gains about 1700 feet in altitude from Blanca (7746 feet) to the pass (over 9200 feet) and then decends again to La Veta on its three-hour, 62-mile trip. In 2007, a vintage steam engine pulled the train on the weekends, and a diesel locomotive pulled it during the rest of the week. In 2008, the steam engines are scheduled to pull the train seven days a week.
