Buildings Around Town

Main Street in 2009

Main Street has changed in the last 100 years. Main Street now is also Highway 160, which runs across the valley from La Veta Pass on the east to Wolf Creek Pass on the west.

Main Street in 1910

Main Street is about the same width now as the original settlers planned. Perhaps they needed the room to turn the horses and wagons around.

1944 Town Hall Building

Old Town Hall was built in 1944, which replaced the original one from 1908.

Town Hall Built in 1981

In 1981, the metal building, center, became Town Hall and the Fire Station. It also housed the town shop and the Costilla County Ambulance. After 1996, the Marshal's Office was in the same building.

The Town has a long history with the ambulance service. Although the Costilla County Ambulance District is a separate, independent, governmental entity with a tax base of its own, the Town of Blanca has furnished a heated bay, electricity, and an office area in the shop for the ambulance and the ambulance crew free of charge for over 20 years.

The Shop is still located in this building on Smith Avenue.

2004 Town Hall Building

New Town Hall was purchased in 2004 with the help of a grant from Colorado's Department of Local Affairs. The offices of the Town Clerk and Marshall moved to the new building. Town meetings are held here also.

Adobe Gymnasium

The old Adobe gymnasium was the site of many dances and basketball games from the 1940's until the Blanca school was consolidated with Ft. Garland's in 1956. In private hands now, the gym needs extensive restoration.

Saint James Catholic Church

The Saint James Catholic Church was built in the 1930s or early 1940s to serve as a mission church for the Catholic community in Blanca and the surrounding area. The priest from the San Luis dioces, Father Pat, holds Mass one Sunday each month during the summer.

Saint James is also the site of the pre-Christmas "Las Posadas" (the inns), which recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph to find a place to stay in Bethlehem.

United for Christ Community Church

The United for Christ Community Church is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Blanca. When the Town was founded in 1908, the residents held church services in the school building, which was merely the top floor of a business in town. Services were also held in the Town Hall.

In 1910, the Methodist congregation built the above building and services were moved from the school. The building has been a place of worship for the community for over 100 years.

Soldiers Memorial

Based on an idea of Blanca resident Judith Barto, the memorial was constructed just after the U.S. went to war in Iraq. Each red, white and blue flag carries the names of the military men and women from Costilla County, who were serving in Iraq.
